The WORST song ever?

Music is subjective. Some people love to listen to mainstream pop music, while others prefer niche stuff, and that’s alright. I like to think that a good artist will write creative, and intuitive music. Bad artists write vapid and stupid music. It’s not clear cut though, and good artists can make some big duds.

Some people form bands based on the sound of their idols, and in many ways, they can equal or surpass the sound of the original. That is probably a good way to describe Jeff Lynne’s ELO. The band was formed in 1970 as a continuation of the sound of The Beatles, after Abbey Road and Let it Be, and ELO did well. Their songs were catchy, had a mix of rock, orchestra, and electronic instruments that tapped into the characteristic sound of The Beatles, and developed it. Jeff Lynne is a huge Beatles fanboy, and it shows in his music.

Obviously, The Beatles had duds, as did ELO. Secret Messages is possibly my least favourite album by the group, but did you know it was meant to be a double album? The band recorded around 20 songs, in anticipation of a double LP, which the record company did not want to do. This led to a lot of tracks being cut. You can listen to them now, and if you have time, and the bonus tracks, you can create the intended double album. Not all the songs have been released though, and there is one which I would argue should never be released. The worst song ever. Beatles Forever.

This song has never been released. This rough quality version was recorded as a bootleg at a fan convention. It is awful, as a song, and as a form of artistic expression. It is awful. This is a rough quality version, mind, but I don’t think it would be much better if it was remastered and finished. This song is a love letter to The Beatles, which in itself is so sweet. But it is so on the nose, that is beyond silly. It actually feels like a parody of the band’s work, and a parody of Lynne, except he wrote it himself! It could have been something much better, and I think that that is what is bad about it. It is a wonderfully bad song for someone to listen to though, like super bad.

While this song was not officially released, you can listen to the song that spawned out of it. The music was reworked and released in 1984, as part of the soundtrack to the film ‘Electric Dreams’ as Video. Having listened to Video, it is an average song, but it is a much superior song compared to Beatles Forever. And that is why I consider Beatles Forever to be the worst song ever made.
